This past summer I was fortunate enough to holiday in Santorini, Greece. It was a beautiful 2 weeks filled with Aegean blue and warm white villas trickling down the cliffs of Santorini. I would never tire of the views and the thing would I would never tire of the most, was the FOOD!
It was far better than the all-inclusives. The busting flavours of cheeses ( I love feta cheese), authentic rich dark olive oil, juicy olives, and fresh fish caught, as we sat by the sea and prepared to our liking. And those tomatoes!! I can`t say enough about Santorini tomatoes. They are actually deemed a PDO product (Protected Design of Origin) they are grown in acidic volcanic soil which gives them their extraordinary flavour. There is a dish called domatokeftedes (tomato fritters) served as an appetizer… very tasty and easy to make. Look for it on my recipe blog.
The Mediterranean diet is centuries old and is considered one of the best whole food diets to consume. Its associated with reduced incidence of cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease. Supplement your diet with mixed nuts, fresh fruits, vegetables and extra virgin olive oil to reap the benefits. You don’t have to be in Greece to enjoy it.
Don`t get me wrong…I did treat myself to baklava and dolmathes (honey balls) but because I was able to enjoy the abundance Santorini had to offer along with a morning run I didn’t leave this vacation feeling bloated and eager to get back on track. Here’s to healthy eating!
